Renowned national multifamily owner, operator and developer to donate $1 million in unrestricted funds in support of HomeStart’s work to end and prevent homelessness

NEWTON, MA (September 22, 2021) – Northland Investment Corporation, one of the country’s leading real estate private equity firms, today announced that it is donating $1 million to HomeStart, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit dedicated to ending homelessness in Greater Boston.

Northland is pursuing this gift in support of HomeStart’s differentiated approach to preventing homelessness before it starts and its potential to dramatically reshape the fight against homelessness. This donation represents a key milestone in HomeStart’s efforts to expand its offerings, including: scaling its disruptive and innovative eviction prevention model known as the Renew Collaborative beyond Massachusetts; piloting new innovative solutions to address housing insecurity; and doubling the number of clients served from 1,500 to 3,000. The donation’s unrestricted nature enables HomeStart to utilize these funds in the most effective and direct ways, allowing it to have the greatest impact on the housing affordability crisis, with no caveats that may prevent the organization from reaching its objectives.

“We are incredibly grateful to Northland for this significant investment in HomeStart and all that it will allow us to accomplish in our fight against housing insecurity in Massachusetts and beyond,” said Matt Pritchard, President and Executive Director of HomeStart. “Northland is a true housing advocate and has been a champion of our cause for many years now, and this donation has set us on a path of incredible momentum. Support like this will have a transformative impact on our efforts, and we look forward to our continued partnership to ensure that everyone, regardless of economic status, has a place to call home.”

With over 26,000 residential units in its portfolio, Northland has become a leader in the U.S.’s real estate industry dedicated to leveraging its reputation and financial power to enact lasting positive change on renters and homeowners across the country. CEO Matthew Gottesdiener has been involved with HomeStart for five years, currently serving on its Board of Directors and acting as its Treasurer. Inspired by the organization’s steadfast dedication to supporting underserved populations and impressed by the number of families and individuals that it has helped over the years, Matthew and Northland pursued this donation to help the organization expand its operations and further provide critical support to families in need across the country.

“It is an honor to partner with such an outstanding organization that is truly leading the fight against homelessness,” said Matthew Gottesdiener, CEO of Northland. “We hope that this collaboration and donation will set an example for other industry players, and that we can all work together to catalyze real change for renters and homeowners across the country. We are thrilled to support HomeStart and its amazing work providing resources to unhoused people throughout the Commonwealth, working with individuals and families to prevent them from experiencing homelessness, and expanding its groundbreaking initiatives into new markets.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the housing crisis that has been devastating vulnerable families for years and disproportionately affecting communities of color and single parent households – and the crisis is only projected to get worse. With a lack of adequate government funding and insufficient COVID-19 federal relief, HomeStart and other organizations have stepped up to develop transformational programs and initiatives that work directly with individuals who are at risk of or are currently experiencing homelessness to prevent the cycle from starting. Northland’s donation will help bring HomeStart’s vision to life in new U.S. cities and help countless individuals avoid housing insecurity.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have more people in our communities struggling with food insecurity, financial insecurity, homelessness and domestic violence. This past holiday season, Northland gave back to the Greater Boston community by donating $100,000 split evenly among four organizations that have worked tirelessly to make our neighborhoods a better place for all:

  • HomeStart, an organization that has permanently housed more than 10,000 individuals living on the street and in shelters, and has prevented nearly 3,000 families from experiencing homelessness.

  • Cradles to Crayons Boston, an organization focused on providing children living in homeless or low-income situations with the essential items they need to thrive at home, at school and at play.

  • Rosie’s Place, the first women’s shelter in the U.S., which remains focused on providing a safe and nurturing environment to help poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity, and find security in their lives.

In addition, Northland matched all of its employees’ contributions to these organizations, raising nearly $10,000 in additional funding for these amazing groups. We are so proud of our team and their generosity, and look forward to supporting these and other amazing groups in 2021.

National real estate firm proudly supports reinstatement of voting rights to

returning citizens

NEWTON, MA (October 23, 2020) – Northland Investment Corporation, today announced the company’s donation of $50,000 to the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition (FRRC). Created after Amendment 4, the “Voting Rights Restoration for Felons Initiative” was passed by Florida voters in 2018, the FRRC works to make sure eligible returning citizens (formerly convicted persons) are registered and able to vote. The organization both financially assists returning citizens to pay court-mandated fines and lobbies state officials on voter disenfranchisement policies, particularly policies affecting those with convictions.

“We want to thank Northland for their incredibly generous donation” said Neil Volz, FRRC’s Deputy Director. “We are heartened by those in Florida’s business community who are invested in the coalition’s mission of expanding democracy. This gift bolsters our fight to tear down barriers and will, by itself, ensure that at least fifty individuals can participate in democracy.”

For more than 25 years, Northland has been a leading multifamily owner and operator in the state of Florida. The company currently provides homes to more than 9,000 families across the state and employees more than 200 Florida residents. Giving back to the communities in which Northland operates is a core part of the organization’s mission, with the key focus areas of combatting homelessness, women’s initiatives, and social justice.

“The right to vote is innate and sacred in America, not one conditioned on financial resources” said Larry Gottesdiener, Chairman and CEO of Northland. “The 2020 election is critical, and we believe every Floridian should have the opportunity to participate in the central democratic tenet which is increasingly under assault by those looking to disenfranchise predominantly Black and Brown voters. Northland feels an obligation to stand up to this effort to perpetuate the status quo of widening inequalities and systemic racism.”

The most recent illustration of Northland’s commitment to civic responsibility is how they designated Election Day, Tuesday, November 3rd as a paid company holiday so employees in all states where Northland operates can be sure to have sufficient time to vote or even volunteer at the polls. Northland has also provided every employee with a face mask that states “Your Vote Matters” in the hopes that each employee will wear the non-partisan mask as a reminder for all Northland employees and residents to make sure their voices are heard on Election Day.

According to the Sentencing Project, 6.1 million Americans are barred from participating in the electoral process nationally. The FRRC is currently working to restore the voting rights of 774,000 Floridians, many of whom owe less than $1,500 in fines stemming from a felony conviction (excluding murder or felony sexual offenses). So far this year FRRC has paid the fines and fees for more than 40,000 returning citizens, making them eligible to register to vote if they want.

About the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition

FRRC is a grassroots, membership organization run by Returning Citizens (Formerly Convicted Persons) who are dedicated to ending the disenfranchisement and discrimination against people with convictions and creating a more comprehensive and humane reentry system that will enhance successful reentry, reduce recidivism, and increase public safety. Dream Big, a nonprofit based in Newton that provides equipment and program fees to low-income girls and young women enabling them to participate in sports and physical activities, this week announced the expansion of warehouse space donated by a local real estate company that increases its ability to meet its mission.

Dream Big said the donation provided by Northland Investment Corporation increased its warehouse space to 2,652 square. Dream Big has been renting office and warehouse space from Northland since 2013.

The expanded space will enable Dream Big to accept large-scale donations of sports equipment, sports attire, and athletic footwear from sponsors in the sporting goods industry and donations from corporate equipment drives held by local companies, including more than $200,000 worth of recently donated sports attire and equipment the organization has been distributing to female student athletes.

In addition to accommodating a larger inventory of sports equipment and attire, the warehouse will provide a venue where coaches can bring their athletes to try on athletic clothing and select equipment.

Linda M. Driscoll, founder, president, and CEO of Dream Big, said, “Northland’s generous contribution comes at an especially significant time. The donated warehouse space allows us to accept more donations of sports equipment and sports attire than ever before as we seek to meet the increasing demand and deepen our impact now that we are celebrating our 10th anniversary. We are deeply grateful to Northland for this meaningful gift.”

Noted Northland Chief Operating Officer Suzanne Abair, “Northland is proud to support Dream Big! in its mission to empower young female athletes from underserved communities. We believe in community investment in all its forms and are thrilled to offer this warehouse space to Dream Big so they can expand their reach and make a positive difference in the lives of even more girls and young women.”

Since its launch in 2010, Dream Big programs have impacted 45,000 girls and young women through grants of new sports equipment and attire, athletic footwear, program and training fees, and the annual Dream Big Leadership Conferences for middle and high school female athletes in urban communities.
