Following major downtown acquisition, firm partners with five local nonprofits to provide critical aid

NEWTON, MA (December 19, 2022) – Northland, a leading national real estate private equity firm, today announced a donation totaling $100,000 to five LA-based nonprofits dedicated to alleviating homelessness and providing critical services to individuals in need. The firm gifted $20,000 each to Chrysalis, the Downtown Women’s Center, LA Mission, PATH, and the Resident Relief Foundation, in support of their respective work offering employment assistance, rent relief, housing, meals, advocacy and health services to individuals and families throughout Greater Los Angeles.

Northland has long been dedicated to leveraging its reputation and resources to enact lasting positive change for renters and homeowners across the country, in line with its core values centered around homelessness prevention, social justice, and women’s initiatives. The firm has enduring relationships with nonprofits working to advance related causes in each of its operating markets including: The American Red Cross, The Greater Boston Food Bank, YW Boston, His Compassion, and HomeStart.

“At Northland, our values as a firm are central to everything we do, and it was important upon entering the LA market to establish relationships with local organizations making a positive impact for those most disadvantaged within the community,” said Northland CEO Matthew Gottesdiener. “The challenges associated with homelessness are complex and arduous, but each of these organizations bring local expertise and critical capabilities to their work, and share an unwavering commitment to the fierce urgency of now. We’re proud to be affiliated with such impactful groups, and look forward to continuing our work together in the years ahead.”

The community-driven donation comes a month after Northland made its entry into the LA market with the acquisition of THEA at Metropolis, representing one of the largest single-asset, market-rate multifamily acquisitions in U.S. history. Located on 8th Street in the heart of Downtown LA, THEA is a 59-story, 685-unit, Type-I constructed mixed-use asset with 30,000 square feet of ground floor retail. THEA was completed in 2020 and is currently stabilized at 91% occupancy.

Northland owns and operates a diversified multifamily portfolio that includes more than 26,000 units throughout 16 states, and a $3 billion development pipeline with marquee land sites in Boston, Atlanta, Orlando, Denver, and Richmond. Following the acquisition of THEA, Northland’s portfolio now presents an average vintage of 2006, with 30% comprising infill mid-rise or urban high-rise assets.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have more people in our communities struggling with food insecurity, financial insecurity, homelessness and domestic violence. This past holiday season, Northland gave back to the Greater Boston community by donating $100,000 split evenly among four organizations that have worked tirelessly to make our neighborhoods a better place for all:

  • HomeStart, an organization that has permanently housed more than 10,000 individuals living on the street and in shelters, and has prevented nearly 3,000 families from experiencing homelessness.

  • Cradles to Crayons Boston, an organization focused on providing children living in homeless or low-income situations with the essential items they need to thrive at home, at school and at play.

  • Rosie’s Place, the first women’s shelter in the U.S., which remains focused on providing a safe and nurturing environment to help poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity, and find security in their lives.

In addition, Northland matched all of its employees’ contributions to these organizations, raising nearly $10,000 in additional funding for these amazing groups. We are so proud of our team and their generosity, and look forward to supporting these and other amazing groups in 2021.

Additional space means free sports attire and equipment for thousands of female athletes

NEWTON, MA (January 15, 2020) – Dream Big! today announced the expansion of a 2,652 square-foot warehouse space donated by landlord and Newton-based real estate investment company, Northland Investment Corporation. The new storage space enables Dream Big! to accept large scale donations of sports equipment, sports attire and athletic footwear from sponsors in the sporting goods industry and donations from corporate equipment drives held by local companies. This new space has allowed Dream Big! the ability to receive over $200,000 worth of recently donated sports attire and equipment that they have been distributing to female student athletes from low-income situations.

Dream Big! works to ensure that all girls and young women, regardless of socio-economic background, have the equipment, sports attire and program fees they need to participate in sports and physical activities that contribute to their health, education and overall well-being. With regular participation in physical activity during childhood and adolescence proven to promote the development of positive body image, confidence, and self-esteem, Dream Big! seeks and distributes donations of athletic equipment, uniforms, and footwear to fulfill the basic needs of girls and young women in elementary, middle, high school and college.

“Northland’s generous contribution comes at an especially significant time,” said Linda M. Driscoll, Dream Big! Founder, President and CEO. “The donated warehouse space allows us to accept more donations of sports equipment and sports attire than ever before as we seek to meet the increasing demand and deepen our impact now that we are celebrating our 10th anniversary. We are deeply grateful to Northland for this meaningful gift.”

In addition to accommodating a larger inventory of sports equipment and attire, the warehouse will be a welcoming space where coaches can bring their athletes to try on athletic clothing and select equipment, ensuring optimal sports performance and comfort.

“Northland is proud to support Dream Big! in its mission to empower young female athletes from underserved communities,” said Suzanne Abair, Chief Operating Officer of Northland Investment Corporation. “We believe in community investment in all its forms and are thrilled to offer this warehouse space to Dream Big! so they can expand their reach and make a positive difference in the lives of even more girls and young women.”

Since its launch, Dream Big! programs have had a direct impact on more than 45,000 girls and young women through grants of new sports equipment and attire, athletic footwear, program and training fees and the annual Dream Big! Leadership Conferences for middle and high school female athletes in urban communities. The organization is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year.

About Dream Big!

Founded in 2010, Dream Big! is a 501C3 Boston based non-profit organization. Dream Big!’s mission is to help girls and young women from low-income situations achieve their dreams by providing them with the items and program fees needed to enable them to participate in sports and physical activities that contribute to their health, education and overall well-being. Dream Big! partners with community sports organizations, social-service organizations and schools to identify and fulfill the basic needs of girls and young women from economically disadvantaged communities, in elementary, junior, high school and college in order to help them engage in organized sports, recreation and physical activities.
