Planned Giving Guide

How to make a difference?

You’ve been focusing on ensuring the stability of your everyday lifestyle needs and planning for a secure retirement—but in the midst of all that, the simple wish to make a difference for others continues to be important. With dozens of community nonprofit organizations from which to choose, it can be confusing. Here are fundamental tips to help you in moving toward fulfilling your wish to make a meaningful contribution.

  • Your personal financial plan. What are your financial goals? Are you seeking a significant charitable tax deduction? Or, would you prefer to make a gift that not only helps fulfill the Library’s mission but would also provide you with fixed payments for life? Or are you looking for an opportunity to volunteer your time and energy?
  • Your values. Start with an inventory of experiences and organizations that have mattered most in your life. Consider what you value in these organizations and what they can accomplish.
  • Your decision. From the list, choose a few organizations or causes of importance to you. Do a little research to find where you can personally make a difference. You may find your efforts more satisfying if you support organizations, like Northland Public Library, that have meant something personally important to you.

Whether your gift is immediate or deferred, remember that we appreciate it. When you follow your heart and know that you can make a meaningful difference to the future, the decision becomes easy.

Talk to your financial advisor, then complete a step-by-step process that will help you decide the best way for you to give.
